J. Yang Scholarships for 2024-2025

The UCLA Asia Pacific Center (APC) announces the J. Yang Scholarship for exceptionally talented students from Taiwan to pursue study at UCLA. New or continuing graduate students in master’s and doctoral programs across the divisions of the College of Letters and Science and professional schools may apply for academic-year 2024-2025. The awards may cover whole or partial non-resident tuition (NRST), in-state tuition, living stipend, or research expenses. Eligible applicants must have completed their high school or undergraduate education in Taiwan.

In addition to the one-time annual awards, a limited number of recruitment fellowship packages will be made to new incoming students to fully cover study at UCLA for up to two years, including tuition/fees, non-resident tuition (NRST), and a living stipend, with exact amounts to be determined based on available funds. New students must apply and be admitted to a graduate program at UCLA. A nomination letter from departments is required for the recruitment scholarships.

New and continuing students should apply directly to the Asia Pacific Center via the online application. The APC will request nomination letters from departments directly.

Application materials include:

  • Proposal of 1-2 pages in length. This should include your specific area of research and plans for the 2023-2024 academic year, such as completing coursework, domestic or overseas research that includes data collection and analysis, dissertation writing, etc. Also indicate the types of expenses that you expect to support with this funding.
  • Unofficial UCLA transcript or most recent university transcript (minimum GPA of 3.0 required)
  • CV
  • Amount requested
  • Other sources of funding (internal or external fellowship, TA or GSR appointment, etc.) during the award period
  • One faculty letter of recommendation

New students entering UCLA in fall 2024: You may submit the statement of purpose from your UCLA application as your proposal. Please submit the transcript for your most recent university degree program. If you would like to resubmit one of your UCLA application recommendation letters without requesting it again from your recommender, please enter the name and contact information of your UCLA department's graduate student advisor in the reference fields. Contact the advisor indicating which recommendation from your file to add to the scholarship application, and confirming that you consent to this letter being shared with the Asia Pacific Center.

Undergraduate Student Applicants

Scholarships will be awarded to incoming students annually. The amount may vary depending on available funding. Incoming UCLA undergraduates from Taiwan who have completed their high school education in Taiwan and are accepted for admission to UCLA are eligible. Students should apply through the UCLA Financial Aid and Scholarships Application at https://ucla.academicworks.com/, after applying for admission to UCLA. The scholarship application period is February 1–June 30, 2024.
