Since her film debut in Kim Ki-young's Woman of Fire (1971), Youn Yuh-jung refused to compromise her practice to serve the patriarchal systems which dominate the majority of mainstream cinema in Korea. As an iconic figure and role model to many actors in Korea Youn continues to push boundaries in her incredible scope of storytelling, routed through her bold forthright perception of each character she portrays. This series highlights the diverse range of works that contribute to Youn's timeless cinematic legacy.
Screenings will take place throughout the month of May, 2024. Yun Yuh-jung will be in-person for Q&A after the screening of Minari on Friday, May 17 and Women of Fire on Saturday, May 18. Minari will be shown at museum's David Geffen Theater while all other films from Woman of Fire to Lucky Chan-sil will be in the museum's Ted Mann Theater. .
