In celebration of Filipino American History Month, Cinema Sala and the UCLA Center of SE Asian Studies is screening the digitally restored and remastered version of the award-winning DEKADA '70, Chito Roño's classic film about a middle class family struggling under Martial Law. In the Philippines, Lualhati Bautista's novel used to be required reading in schools about Ferdinand Marcos' dictatorship. Now in the aftermath of the May 2022 elections, it is important to learn from our country's past in order to help with its future. After the film screening, there will be a panel of Filipino artists and experts led by UCLA Assistant Professor of Cinema and Media Studies Jasmine Nadua Trice about the film, Philippine history, and the politics of the present.
