Could you tell us about your journey to UCLA?
After graduating from university and graduate school in Japan, I worked as an engineer at a chemical manufacturer. I was selected for the company’s study abroad program and, with full support, studied at UCLA with my family. After returning to Japan, I earned my Doctor of Engineering degree. In 2018, I was headhunted to become the president of the Japanese subsidiary of a German company. My learning and experiences at UCLA have been the foundation of my international career.
What sort of opportunities has working abroad presented you with?
At the Japanese branch of a German company, I gained valuable experience leading a multinational team in English. Engaging with different business cultures and perspectives has strengthened my adaptability and broadened my viewpoints. These experiences have been invaluable in deepening my cross-cultural understanding and expanding my global outlook.
What would you say to a UCLA student who is planning on having an international career?
Embrace challenges and maintain a mindset of continuous learning. As an international student from Japan, the language barrier in English was significant for me, but for UCLA students, English can be a powerful tool. By being open to different cultures and diverse values and taking proactive steps, you can greatly expand your path to an international career.
